This is the running record of material corrections and substantive updates to our guides, newest first. Each entry names the page, what was wrong or what changed, and the source behind the change. Our editorial policy explains when a change is logged here: anything that could have affected a reader's decision, such as a wrong price, a wrong contract term, or a claim we could no longer support. Routine re-verification of prices that did not change, typo fixes, and formatting are not logged.
Individual articles show the date they were last updated. Entries before August 2026 were made before this log existed and were noted on the articles themselves at the time.

- Find the right security setup
The eufy entry has been rewritten around what eufy actually publishes, after we learned where it publishes it. Three changes. (1) We dropped the indoor-camera entry price rather than refresh it. This entry used to say the cheapest eufy indoor camera was "about $43", flagged as a promotion due to expire today. Checked on September 7, 2026, that camera, the Indoor Cam C120, is no longer sold: its product page at eufy.com returns a 404, it does not appear in eufy's own site search for its own name, and it is absent from eufy's security-camera collection. Every other eufy indoor camera is currently listed mid-promotion, so there is no list price to put in its place, and we have said so instead of inferring one. (2) The hub figure was wrong and is now sourced. The entry said footage goes to a HomeBase hub costing "about $99 to $149". eufy's own product pages price its two standalone hubs at $199.99 for the HomeBase S380 and $499.99 for the HomeBase Professional S1. Both are corrected. (3) We found where eufy states its real prices, which is why the rest of this is fixable. eufy's listing and search pages show a price that already has a coupon deducted, while the product page for the same item shows the undiscounted price and the coupon code separately. The SoloCam S340 reads $139.99 on the listing page and $199.99 on its own product page with a $60.00 code offered beside it. Our $199.99 figure was previously arrived at by adding the discount back, which was arithmetic; it is now taken directly from eufy's product page, and the link on this entry now points there rather than at the eufy home page, which states no prices at all. What did not change: eufy still requires no subscription, which is why the brand is on this list, and the recommendation is unchanged.

- Find the right security setup
We removed a Reolink cloud-storage price from this selector rather than update it, because we could not stand behind it. The entry said "optional cloud from ~$5.99/mo for one camera, ~$6.99/mo for up to five" and linked to the Reolink home page, which states neither figure. Checked on September 6, 2026: Reolink's own cloud plan page at cloud.reolink.com/cloud-plan shows the plan features but no price at all before you sign in, and the one Reolink-owned page that does publish figures, its 2026 subscription-cost article, contradicts itself. It prices the Standard Plan at "USD 6.99 per month" in the plan box, then tells readers to "split the USD 3.49 five ways" for that same five-camera plan, then elsewhere calls the single-device plan "the USD 3 plan" while its own plan box says "USD 5.99 per month (regular price USD 4.29, 30 % off)", a discount higher than the regular price it is discounted from. We are not able to say which of those is the real number, so we no longer print one. What did not change: Reolink cameras genuinely need no subscription to record, which is stated consistently by Reolink and is the reason the brand is on this list. Camera prices and the recommendation itself are unchanged.

- Five-year home security cost calculator
Sourcing only; no preset figure and no arithmetic changed. The paragraph explaining the presets dated the Ring and Frontpoint figures to "July 2026" and cited nothing first-party for either. All three named monthly figures were re-verified at the provider's own site and are unchanged: Ring Pro $19.99 (ring.com/plans, September 3), Frontpoint Interactive $44.99 (offer-details, September 4, where Frontpoint states it as "regularly priced at $44.99 per month, plus tax" under a 36-month contract) and ADT $59.99 (adt.com residential terms, September 4). The Frontpoint, Ring and ADT pages are now cited directly in Sources, because Frontpoint's monitoring page has moved to daily rates and no longer states a monthly price. - Find the right security setup
Three fixes, none of which changed a recommendation. (1) This module carried a blanket line saying "Prices verified July 12, 2026", which was not true in either direction: the SimpliSafe and Cove entries had been re-read in late August, while the Ring, Reolink, eufy and Frontpoint entries carried no date at all. Every figure now states the date we read it. (2) The eufy entry said "Cameras from ~$42.99". Read at eufy.com on September 4, 2026, $42.99 is the Indoor Cam C120 on a fixed $17 discount that eufy's own store data shows running from August 24 to September 7, 2026, so it is a sale price and not an entry price. The entry now says so and leads with the SoloCam S340 list price instead. (3) The Frontpoint entry quoted $44.99 and $49.99 while linking to the Frontpoint home page, which states neither figure. Frontpoint's monitoring page moved to daily rates only, but its offer-details page still publishes both monthly prices verbatim, plus the 36-month term and the 80% early-termination fee. The entry now links there and names the termination fee. No figure was rewritten.

- Free Professional Installation: Which Providers Offer It, and What It Actually Costs
Retitled and reframed. The page already contained the answer to the question readers actually ask, which is who installs free and what the free install costs, but it was headed "Who Publishes a Number", a framing that describes our method rather than the reader's question. The body research is unchanged. What is new is the summary box below, a section that answers the free-installation question directly, and one added FAQ entry. Vivint's two prices were re-verified at source on September 3, 2026 and are unchanged: $199.99 with free professional installation on a 36-month agreement, $349.99 with no long-term contract and installation an additional $199.

- Best No-Contract Home Security Systems (Research-Based)
The eufy row was re-read against eufy's own US security-camera page and one price was corrected against us. On August 24 this page recorded the eufyCam S4 4-Cam Kit at $999.99 on a stated $400 saving; on September 1 the same kit displays $1,399.99 with no saving applied, so that promotion has ended and a reader following our figure would have found the kit $400 dearer than we said. The Floodlight E340 at $219.99 and the PoE NVR S4 Max at $2,099.99 were both unchanged. The SoloCam S340 now shows $139.99 against a stated $60 saving, which implies the same $199.99 list we already recorded, so that is a discount rather than a price change and the list figure stands. Four items we published in August were not on the page this time and are now labelled as carried forward unconfirmed rather than left to read as current. Cove was also re-checked on the same rotation and every figure on this page is correct: Cove's own plan page still publishes $0.77, $1.10 and $1.43 a day, confirmed against the rendered page rather than an extraction, so nothing needed changing.

- Vivint Buyout and Cancellation: Contract Payoff, the Switch Reimbursement, and Penalty-Free Exits
Vivint publishes two different financing maximums on one page, and last week's correction on this page quoted only one of them. On August 22 this page replaced the third-party "42 to 60 months" with 36 months, taken from Vivint's own financing ladder. Re-reading the whole of that same URL on August 29, including the offer terms block below the pricing section, found Vivint stating "0% APR for up to 60 months, with terms varying by offer". So the figure removed as unsupported has a Vivint sentence behind it after all. Both are now shown together in the two places on this page that state a term, and the advice is to read your own agreement rather than either number. Nothing else changed: no fee, no phone number, no step in the cancellation process and no heading. An outbound-link tracking script was also added; it changes nothing a reader sees. - Security System Costs, Contracts, and Cancellation: The Fine Print
A correction this page made a week ago was itself incomplete, and the figure it removed as unsupported turns out to have a Vivint sentence behind it. On August 22 this page replaced the widely repeated "42 to 60 months" for financed Vivint equipment with Vivint's own published ladder, and called 36 months the maximum Vivint publishes. A whole-page re-read on August 29 found the "Financing Options" paragraph in the offer terms of that same URL stating "Qualified customers may finance at 0% APR for up to 60 months, with terms varying by offer". The August 22 read had quoted the pricing section and not the terms block below it. Both Vivint sentences are now shown together, in three places on this page, with neither presented as the company's single answer. No other figure changed: monitoring, HomeProtect and HomeProtect Pro prices were all re-read on August 29 and are verbatim unchanged. An outbound-link tracking script was also added to this page; it changes nothing a reader sees.

- Five-year home security cost calculator
The Cove (Plus) preset was changed from $32.99 to $33.46 a month, and the paragraph describing the presets was rewritten to say why. Cove publishes no monthly price; its plan page lists $1.10 a day (read 2026-08-28), and $1.10 x 365 ÷ 12 is $33.46, not $32.99. Over the sixty months this calculator models, that difference is about $28. The same correction was made for SimpliSafe on August 26 and was scoped to SimpliSafe alone. A broken sentence in the same paragraph ("The presets but they deliberately leave...") was repaired at the same time. No other preset and no calculation changed. - Alarm System Takeover: Switch Monitoring, Keep the Panel
The ADT deals-page entry in the source list carried a verbatim quotation, read August 20, 2026, requiring a "min. $349 pro installed system purchase". Re-read on August 28, 2026 that sentence is not on the page in any form; the offer now reads "$99 home security system includes Google Nest Cam and installation" on the same 36-month contract at the same $59.99/mo floor. The source entry now carries both readings with their dates. Nothing in the body of this page changed. - Professional vs Self-Monitoring: An Honest Decision Guide
The Cove monthly monitoring figures in the price list and in this page's FAQ structured data were rewritten. Cove publishes daily rates only ($0.77, $1.10 and $1.43, read 2026-08-28) and states no monthly price. The $22.99, $32.99 and $42.99 shown here were this site's own multiply-by-30 arithmetic, which drops five or six billed days a year; at 365 ÷ 12 the figures are $23.42, $33.46 and $43.50 and they are now labelled as ours. The August 26 pass corrected SimpliSafe on exactly this point and was scoped to SimpliSafe alone. No other provider figure and no recommendation changed. - Free Professional Installation: Which Providers Offer It, and What It Actually Costs
The ADT row, the ADT paragraph and this page's FAQ structured data all quoted "min. $349 pro installed system purchase" from ADT's deals page, read August 17, 2026. Re-read on August 28, 2026 that sentence is not on that page in any form, and the offer instead reads "$99 home security system includes Google Nest Cam and installation" with a 36-month contract, Pro Monitoring from $59.99/mo and credit approval. All three places now state what the page says today and keep the August 17 reading as dated history. The paragraph's conclusion was rewritten rather than repriced, because the durable point was never the $349 itself: the advertised entry price is a condition of a three-year monitoring agreement. No other provider's figure changed, and ADT's monthly rate did not change. - No Money Down Home Security: What the Free Equipment Actually Costs You
The ADT example in the offer-shape table quoted fine print read on August 20, 2026 requiring a "min. $349 pro installed system purchase". Re-read on August 28, 2026 that sentence is not on ADT's deals page in any form; the offer now reads "$99 home security system includes Google Nest Cam and installation" with the same 36-month contract and the same $59.99/mo floor, subject to credit approval. Both readings are now shown with their dates, because the eight-day gap between a $349 entry price and a $99 one is a better illustration of this page's argument than either figure alone. No argument, table structure or recommendation changed. - Best No-Contract Home Security Systems (Research-Based)
Every Cove monthly monitoring figure on this page was rewritten, for the same reason the SimpliSafe figures were rewritten two days ago. Cove's own plan page publishes all three plans as daily rates only ($0.77, $1.10 and $1.43, read 2026-08-28) and states no monthly price anywhere. The $22.99, $32.99 and $42.99 this page attributed to Cove were this site's own arithmetic, produced by multiplying by 30, which drops the five or six days a year you are also billed for. Converted correctly at 365 ÷ 12 the figures are $23.42, $33.46 and $43.50, and the five-year range moves from $1,380-$2,580 to $1,405-$2,610. The August 26 pass was scoped to SimpliSafe and said so, which is why this sat for two more days. Nothing here was false about Cove's product; the numbers were credited to the wrong author and were off by roughly fifty cents a month. - Find the right security setup

ADT's monthly rate did not change; the advertised entry price did, by $250. The row now states what the page says today and keeps the August 9 observation as dated history rather than deleting it. No other provider figure and no recommendation changed.

- Five-year home security cost calculator
The two SimpliSafe presets were changed from $22.99 and $32.99 a month to $23.12 and $33.46. SimpliSafe publishes no monthly price on its own plan page, only daily rates (76¢ Standard and $1.10 Core, read 2026-08-26), and the URL that used to carry monthly figures returns SimpliSafe's own "Page not found". The old preset values were therefore attributed to SimpliSafe when SimpliSafe does not state them, and they are not what the daily rates work out to: 76¢ a day is $277.40 a year, which is $23.12 a month. The presets now carry a conversion at 365 days ÷ 12 and the page says plainly that those two figures are ours. No other preset was touched. - Home Security With No Monthly Fee: What You Give Up
The four places this page put a $9.99 monthly price on SimpliSafe's camera self-monitoring plan were rewritten. The $22.99 and $32.99 figures this page had been attributing to SimpliSafe do not divide out of those daily rates exactly, so they were replaced with the published daily rates plus a conversion at 365 days ÷ 12 that we now label as ours. Changed as a result: the 60-month arithmetic example; both SimpliSafe rows of the 5-year table (monitoring $1,379 to $1,387 and $1,979 to $2,008; totals $1,629 to $1,637 and $2,229 to $2,258); the headline summary ($1,600 to $2,200 became $1,600 to $2,300); the monitoring section; and the "comparison people get wrong" framing. Also removed: the claim that "one plan reported near $19.99", which was third-party and is not on SimpliSafe's page today. More importantly, this page had been converting daily to monthly by multiplying by 30, and asserting that 76¢ a day and $22.99 a month "are the same number". They are not: 76¢ a day is $277.40 a year, or $23.12 a month. Multiplying by 30 quietly drops five or six billed days a year. The conversion is now 365 ÷ 12 across the site and it is labelled as ours. The SimpliSafe camera self-monitoring line was rebuilt on the same basis. - Best No-Contract Home Security Systems (Research-Based)
The eufy row was re-read against eufy's own US security-camera page and rewritten. Three named system prices recorded here on August 9 ($2,799.99, $2,399.99 and $1,979.99) were not on that page on August 24, so they were replaced with the eight prices that were, and the row now says plainly that the top and bottom of the range are unconfirmed rather than implying the old figures still stand. The Ring row was corrected in the same pass: it described $19.99 as Ring's "top plan", and on August 24 Ring's own plans page publishes a fourth tier above it at $99.00 a month. That figure was not wrong about Ring Pro, it was wrong about Ring's ceiling, and it is the kind of understatement that makes a provider look cheaper than it is.

- Vivint Buyout and Cancellation: Contract Payoff, the Switch Reimbursement, and Penalty-Free Exits
The contract length on this page was corrected downwards, and the source of the correction is Vivint itself. Two passages said a financed Vivint agreement runs 42 to 60 months. That figure came from third-party reporting, was labelled as such elsewhere on this site, and had stood because Vivint published nothing to check it against. Vivint's own how-to-buy page now publishes a financing ladder topping out at 36 months at 0% interest, so the 42-to-60 figure has been replaced with Vivint's own number rather than kept beside it. The SafeHome source that carried the 42-to-60 range is left in the list below, unchanged, so the disagreement is visible rather than tidied away. Nothing else on this page changed: no fee, no phone number, no step in the cancellation process, and no heading. - Security System Costs, Contracts, and Cancellation: The Fine Print
Vivint started publishing its financing terms again, and the number is smaller than the one everybody repeats. A routine re-read of Vivint's own how-to-buy page found it rebuilt. It now states "terms up to 36 months at 0% interest" and lists the tiers by order size. Until today this page reported financed Vivint hardware at 42 to 60 months, on third-party authority, and said in two places that Vivint publishes no term at all. Both statements were true when written and are not true now, so the 42-to-60 figure has been removed rather than carried alongside the company's own number, and the transparency table's Vivint row has been softened from "No" to "Partly" with the thing Vivint still does not publish named specifically. Also recorded: the same page now carries three different monthly monitoring figures at once, $24.99, $44.99 and $29.99, describing different bundles. Two other changes, unrelated to Vivint. The summary box at the top said a professionally installed contract "commonly" costs $40 to $60+ a month; that band carried no source and three of the four providers we track publish a starting rate below its floor, so it has been replaced with the published range of $24.99 to $59.99 and the 36-month term. And this page's title and description were rewritten to lead with contract terms, because Search Console shows it ranking between positions 2 and 11 for questions about contract terms and between 29 and 76 for the cost phrases the old title targeted. Earlier: August 19, 2026 - a sourcing audit of this page's comparison tables, and one correction that goes in a company's favour. Three changes. First, the contract-length table's ADT row is now tied to ADT's own documents: the 36-month term, the 24-month California term and the 75% termination charge are quoted from ADT's residential terms and its published Monitoring Contract Terms, read August 19, and a sourcing note sits beneath the table. Second, the Vivint 42-to-60-month loan term is now labelled as a third-party figure, because Vivint publishes no term on its own site. Third, the transparency table said ADT's early-exit fee was named but not quantified; following the "terms here" link in ADT's own fine print reaches the quantified figure, so that row was corrected and the correction is stated on the page rather than made silently. One sentence of body text was also replaced: it said moving "usually does not void the contract", which is the opposite of what ADT publishes. No price, provider ranking or recommendation on this page was changed. Earlier: August 17, 2026 - corrected a claim this page had been making about Vivint. It said Vivint no longer publishes a package price list at all. Vivint's own pricing article does publish one, and also publishes two different installation prices for the same package, so the sentence was replaced with the narrower and accurate version rather than quietly deleted. No price figure on this page changed. Earlier: August 16, 2026 - added a section comparing which providers publish their contract term and early-exit fee on their own websites, built by re-reading ADT, Frontpoint, Cove and SimpliSafe for contract language on August 16, 2026 and Vivint on August 15, 2026, plus a direct answer to whether a five-year contract is normal. No price, provider ranking or recommendation on this page was changed. Earlier: August 9, 2026 - the ADT monitoring figures were re-checked against ADT's own site and both were changed. The professionally installed band of "$45.99 to $59.99" became from $59.99, because $45.99 no longer appears anywhere on adt.com and the only rate ADT still publishes is the "starting at $59.99/mo" line in its current promotion's fine print, which is a floor and not a ceiling. The Self Setup figure of "from around $24.99" became the full published range of $24.99 to $37.99 depending on kit, with AutoPay enrolment required, taken from ADT's own shop terms. Presenting $45.99 as the low end had been understating ADT's own published starting price by $14 a month, or about $504 across a 36-month term. No other price, provider or recommendation on this page was changed. Earlier: July 27, 2026 - corrected the ADT professionally installed band from $49.99 to $45.99 to $59.99 after checking ADT's own pages rather than a third-party summary. - How to Choose a Home Security System (Without Getting Upsold)
Replaced an unsourced monthly cost band, and noted that a claim in the entry below has since expired. The cost paragraph said professionally installed providers "commonly" cost $40 to $60+ per month. That band carried no source and three of the four large providers we track publish a starting rate below its floor, so it has been replaced with the published range, $24.99 to $59.99, and with the 36-month term those providers state. Separately, and recorded here rather than quietly: the July 31 entry below says Vivint's HomeProtect figures "can no longer be confirmed from any Vivint source". On August 22, 2026 they can. Vivint's rebuilt how-to-buy page publishes HomeProtect equipment "regularly priced at $349.99, with professional installation priced at $199 and Vivint system monitoring at $29.99/mo.", along with a financing ladder topping out at 36 months at 0% interest. The removal was right at the time and the reason for it has now lapsed. No recommendation, verdict or fit judgement on this page was changed. Earlier: August 19, 2026 - corrected an unsourced claim inside the DIY-versus-professional table. The "moving house" row said that with professional installation the "contract follows you". ADT publishes the opposite: its support site says a move means cancelling "in most cases" because contracts are "typically tied to the location of the home being monitored", and its residential terms state that a professionally installed system remains ADT's property. The row was rewritten around what providers actually publish, a sourcing note was added beneath the table, and the row now links to our moving guide. This correction came out of a deliberate audit of every comparison table on the site for factual claims carrying no source. No price, recommendation or provider verdict on this page was changed. Earlier: July 31, 2026 - rewrote the Vivint pricing line. It previously named a "HomeProtect" package at $349.99 equipment plus $199 install plus $29.99 a month. Vivint has taken its public pricing pages down: both /packages and /plans-and-pricing now return a 404, and the only surface still publishing figures states just "Equipment starts at $199.99" and "Vivint Monitoring starts at $24.99/mo". Because that package name and those figures can no longer be confirmed from any Vivint source, they were removed rather than left standing on a dated hedge. The ADT figures in the same module were re-verified from ADT's own pages on July 30 and are unchanged. No recommendation, verdict or fit judgement on this page was changed.

- How to Use Old ADT Equipment Without Paying for Monitoring
Added a subsection recording that ADT publishes two contradictory answers to the ownership question. Its Monitoring Contract Terms say installed equipment is owned by the customer; its residential terms-and-conditions page says a professionally installed system remains ADT's property. Both were live on adt.com on August 19, 2026 and both are quoted verbatim with their sources. We did not pick a winner, because which one governs depends on the agreement actually signed, and the practical steps to settle it for your own address are listed instead. Changed the ADT pro-install preset monthly monitoring figure from 45.99 to 59.99 and updated the prose that names it. On August 9 the only monitoring rate published anywhere on adt.com was the fine print of its current promotion, requiring a 36-month plan "starting at $59.99/mo"; $45.99 no longer appears on ADT's site. This page was found by a sitewide sweep after the same figure was corrected on three other pages, which is the point worth recording: the July 27 correction had updated some places and missed this one, so the calculator quietly disagreed with the cost pages for thirteen days. The calculator's arithmetic, the other presets and the illustrative five-year worked example were not changed. Presets are starting points; type your own quoted figures over them. The ADT professionally installed monitoring rate was re-verified against ADT's own site and corrected to from $59.99 per month, and the correction was carried through every figure on this page that depended on it, which the July 27 update had not done. On August 9 we could find only one monitoring rate published anywhere on adt.com: the fine print of its current promotion, requiring a 36-month plan "starting at $59.99/mo". The $45.99 and $56.99 figures cited here in July no longer appear on ADT's site, adt.com/pricing now returns a "not found" page, and ADT's main security, package comparison and DIY comparison pages publish no monthly price at all. Changed as a result: the 60-month arithmetic example ($49.99 to $59.99, and the illustrative monthly gap from $27 to $37); the ADT Pro Install row of the 5-year table (monitoring $2,999 to $3,599, total $3,697 to $4,297); the headline summary ($3,700 to $4,300); the cancellation worked example (about $900 to about $1,080); the "comparison people get wrong" section; and both places stating the maximum 5-year gap ($3,000 to $4,000). The ADT Self Setup line was also given its full published range, $24.99 to $37.99 per month depending on kit, with AutoPay enrolment required. Why this needed a second pass: the July 27 update changed one sentence to $45.99 and left $49.99 in five other places on the same page, including the table, so the page contradicted itself for thirteen days. No SimpliSafe figure, no comparison method and no recommendation was changed.
