How we evaluated (and what we didn't do): we have not hands-on tested these systems. This comparison is built from provider documentation, published terms, and independent reporting, all accessed July 2, 2026. We compared six criteria: true recurring-cost floor, what the free tier actually includes, expansion costs, contract/cancellation terms, published privacy record, and known limitations. Prices are around the listed amounts as of July 2026 - verify current pricing; this category discounts constantly. If you're new to the whole decision, start with our guide to choosing a system.

"No contract" here means: month-to-month monitoring you can cancel without penalty, and equipment you own outright with no financing requirement. All six below qualify. Note that "no contract" does not mean "no recurring costs" - the honest comparison is the monthly floor for the feature set you actually want, which is why each entry lists recurring costs explicitly.

SimpliSafe - the full-service option without the contract

SimpliSafe is the closest thing to traditional professional monitoring on month-to-month terms. Monitoring ran $22.99/month (Standard) or $32.99/month (Core, adding camera verification and full app control) as of July 2026, with premium Active Guard outdoor plans at $49.99–$79.99 - verify current pricing. Packages listed around $250–$730.

  • Best for: people who want serious, verification-capable monitoring - including for a parent's home or frequent travel - without signing a term contract.
  • Avoid if: you plan to self-monitor. Without a paid plan the system works as a local alarm, but SimpliSafe gates more app functionality behind subscriptions than Ring, Abode, or eufy.
  • Limitations: closed ecosystem (no meaningful third-party sensor support); smart-home integration is thin; per-sensor expansion costs more than budget brands.
  • Recurring costs: realistically $22.99–$32.99/month; $9.99/month if you only want camera recordings with self-monitoring.
  • Privacy notes: no major publicized breach that we found in current reporting. Camera-verification and Active Guard plans give monitoring agents event-triggered access to camera feeds - read what you're consenting to before enabling.

Ring Alarm - the ecosystem play

Ring pairs the cheapest well-known hardware with Amazon-scale ecosystem depth. The 8-piece kit listed around $250–$305 as of July 2026; professional monitoring requires the top-tier plan at roughly $19.99–$20/month. Note Ring restructured and renamed its subscription plans recently and raised prices for legacy subscribers in 2026 - check current plan names and terms at ring.com/plans before assuming anything you read elsewhere is current.

  • Best for: households already using Ring doorbells/cameras or Alexa, and self-monitorers who want a solid free tier (alerts and live view work without a plan).
  • Avoid if: privacy record is a deciding factor for you, or you want monitoring under $15/month.
  • Limitations: video recording, cellular backup, and pro monitoring all sit behind subscription tiers; the useful feature set without a plan is narrower than the hardware suggests.
  • Recurring costs: $0 self-monitored without recordings; ~$4.99–$9.99/month for camera recording tiers; ~$19.99–$20/month for professional monitoring.
  • Privacy notes: the weakest published record here. In 2023 Ring settled FTC allegations that employees and contractors improperly accessed customer videos and that hackers took over accounts, paying $5.8 million in refunds. Its police footage-sharing mechanisms have changed direction more than once since. None of this means current products are insecure - Ring has since added mandatory 2FA and end-to-end encryption options - but review settings deliberately.

Abode - the smart-home pick

Abode is the only system here with first-class Apple HomeKit support plus Z-Wave and Zigbee radios, meaning it can absorb third-party sensors rather than locking you to house-brand hardware. Free self-monitoring is genuinely usable (app access, live view, notifications); the Standard plan ran about $8.49/month and professional monitoring about $26.99/month as of July 2026 (annual billing cheaper) - verify current pricing, as Abode has also introduced newer lower-priced plan tiers.

  • Best for: smart-home users (especially Apple homes) and self-monitorers who want room to grow.
  • Avoid if: you want the cheapest pro monitoring (Wyze/eufy undercut it substantially) or maximum corporate stability - Abode is much smaller than Amazon or SimpliSafe.
  • Limitations: hardware catalog is smaller; some advanced automation features sit behind paid plans; camera lineup is thinner than Ring's.
  • Recurring costs: $0 workable; ~$8.49/month for cloud extras; ~$26.99/month for professional monitoring.
  • Privacy notes: no major publicized breach that we found in current reporting. Standard cloud-video caveats apply.

Cove - the simple panel, if you'll pay monthly

Cove sells a touchscreen-panel system that behaves like a traditional alarm without the contract: month-to-month monitoring at roughly $19.99–$22.99 (basic) to $32.99–$42.99 (camera-supported tiers) as of July 2026. Equipment for a typical home ran $315–$500 at list, but Cove runs near-permanent deep sales (70% off equipment was advertised in mid-2026) - never pay list. It also offers Affirm financing; taking it converts your "no contract" system into a payment obligation, so treat financing as optional and skippable.

  • Best for: people who want a monitored, keypad-first system (including less technical households) with no term commitment.
  • Avoid if: you might ever want to self-monitor - Cove is built around its monitoring service, with no free self-monitoring tier.
  • Limitations: closed ecosystem; smart-home integration only on the upper plan; equipment resale/reuse value outside Cove service is effectively nil.
  • Recurring costs: ~$19.99–$42.99/month, permanently - over five years that's $1,200–$2,600 on top of hardware.
  • Privacy notes: no major publicized breach that we found in current reporting.

Wyze - the price floor

Wyze makes the cheapest credible security setup available: a core kit (hub, keypad, sensors) around $112, sensors that cost less than anyone else's, and professional monitoring via Noonlight at about $9.99/month or $99.99/year as of July 2026 - verify current pricing.

  • Best for: tight budgets, renters, first systems, and anyone whose alternative is "no system at all."
  • Avoid if: camera privacy is central to your decision, or you want polished hardware and support - user reports on reliability and support are mixed across review platforms.
  • Limitations: monitoring is the basic Noonlight service without the verification depth of SimpliSafe/ADT centers; ecosystem is Wyze-only for security devices; company support resources are thinner.
  • Recurring costs: ~$9.99/month for pro monitoring; camera cloud plans separate if wanted.
  • Privacy notes: in February 2024 a Wyze incident let roughly 13,000 users briefly see thumbnails or event video from other users' cameras - the second such incident reported at the company. Wyze attributed it to a caching library and added safeguards. If you buy Wyze, the rational posture is: excellent value on sensors and alarms; think harder about where you point the cameras.

eufy - the local-storage option

eufy (Anker) built its pitch on local storage and no mandatory fees: recordings live on a HomeBase in your house, AI person/package detection runs without subscription, and self-monitoring is free. Professional monitoring became available as an optional month-to-month add-on around $9.99/month (via Noonlight/partner centers) as of July 2026 - verify current pricing and availability for your specific devices, as this offering is newer than the others here.

  • Best for: privacy-first and subscription-averse buyers who want cameras plus alarm functions with recordings kept in-house.
  • Avoid if: professional monitoring depth is your priority - eufy's monitoring offering is the newest and least proven in this list - or if the 2022 controversy (below) ends the conversation for you.
  • Limitations: security-system (vs camera) hardware lineup is narrower; HomeBase storage means a stolen base can mean stolen footage unless configured carefully; integrations are moderate.
  • Recurring costs: $0 is realistic long-term; ~$9.99/month only if you add professional monitoring.
  • Privacy notes: in late 2022 researchers showed some eufy camera thumbnails reached Anker's cloud despite local-only marketing, and streams could be accessed outside the app; Anker initially denied, later acknowledged the issues and moved to end-to-end encryption with an outside audit commitment. The current architecture is stronger than the old marketing was honest. Weigh that history yourself.

How to actually pick from these six

  • Want real monitoring, money no object → SimpliSafe. Cheapest real monitoring → Wyze (or eufy if local storage appeals).
  • Self-monitoring forever → eufy or Abode. Their free tiers are designed to be lived on; Ring's and SimpliSafe's are designed to upsell. Decide which camp you're in with our monitoring guide.

  • Buying for a parent → Cove or SimpliSafe - panel/keypad-first designs with monitoring that doesn't depend on anyone's phone.
