Security Cameras With No Subscription: Which Brands Record Locally, and What Each Costs

"No subscription" means three different things depending on the box. Reolink, eufy, TP-Link Tapo and Wyze record to a card or hub you own, with no plan, and Blink does the same through a Sync Module 2 and a USB drive. Arlo records locally only if you buy its SmartHub. Google Nest keeps a few hours of short clips and has no local option. Ring records nothing without a plan. Decide which of those you are buying before you look at a single spec sheet, because the plan, not the camera, is where the five-year money goes.
Most camera marketing has a subscription hiding behind it. The camera is cheap, the app is free, and then the thing you actually wanted, recorded video you can scroll back through, turns out to be a monthly line item. This page sorts the mainstream US brands by one question: what does the camera record, and where, if you never pay a cent after buying it? Every price below was read on the vendor's own page on the date shown. We have not tested these cameras; this is a documented comparison of what each company publishes, not a review of picture quality.

The three kinds of "no subscription"
- Local-first. The camera writes video to a microSD card, a hub or a network video recorder in your home. Recording, playback and usually some on-device detection work with no plan. Cloud is an optional extra. This is the only version of "no subscription" that keeps its meaning after year one.
- Local-capable with a catch. The camera can record locally, but only with an extra box (a hub or base station) or only for some features. Recording is free; the smart alerts that make the recordings findable are often not.
- Cloud-only with a free sliver. There is no local storage at all. The free tier is a live view, alerts and either nothing or a short window of event clips. When the window closes, so does your evidence.

Two things in that table deserve a second look. First, the cheapest plans (Wyze, Tapo, Blink) are priced per camera; the moment you own three cameras, the unlimited tier is the real price. Second, "records locally" and "alerts you usefully" are separate columns. Wyze and Blink will happily fill a card with motion clips for free, but the person-versus-cat filter that stops you muting notifications by week two is a plan feature on both. Reolink and eufy run that detection on the camera itself, which is the main reason they keep appearing at the top of no-subscription lists.
What five years of "just $3 a month" adds up to
Plan prices look trivial next to the camera. Multiply by the life of the camera and by the number of cameras and they stop being trivial. The table uses the monthly prices published on 2026-09-09, over 60 months, for one camera; annual billing lowers most figures by roughly 15 to 20 percent, and the per-camera plans multiply.

Arithmetic only, and it assumes prices hold, which they have not: Blink raised US plan prices in October 2025 and Wyze raised Cam Plus annual from $19.99 to $29.99 in March 2026, both documented on the vendors' own support pages linked below. What "no subscription" quietly costs you
- The footage can leave with the camera. A microSD card records the burglar and then departs in the burglar's pocket. Cloud storage exists partly to solve exactly this. The resilient local setup puts the recorder somewhere else: a hub or NVR indoors and out of sight (Reolink Home Hub or NVR, eufy HomeBase, Blink Sync Module, Arlo SmartHub), which is why the hub-based brands are the stronger "free" option even though the hub costs money up front.
- The hub is the hidden purchase. eufy's HomeBase S380 listed at $199.99 on 2026-09-07. Blink's Sync Module 2 and Arlo's SmartHub are sold separately. Price the hub into the comparison or the "free" camera is not really cheaper than the subscription one for two or three years.
- Remote viewing still goes through the vendor. Opening the app from work routes the stream through the brand's servers even when the recording stays at home. Local storage reduces your exposure; it does not make the camera private. - "Local" is a claim, not a guarantee. In 2022 eufy cameras were shown to be uploading face thumbnails to the cloud with cloud features switched off. eufy acknowledged the uploads. The lesson is to verify the current behaviour of the specific model, not to avoid one brand.
- Cards wear out. A camera writing 24/7 to a consumer microSD card will eventually kill it. Buy a card rated for continuous video recording ("high endurance" is the usual label) and expect to replace it; that is still cheaper than a year of most plans.
Who each option fits, and who should skip it

When paying for the plan is the right call
None of this says subscriptions are a scam. If you want the footage to survive a theft without buying a hub, want person and package detection on a budget camera, want 30 to 180 days of searchable history, or want one plan covering doorbell and cameras with professional monitoring bolted on, a plan is the cheaper and simpler route, and Ring Multi or Arlo Secure unlimited are priced for households with several cameras. The mistake is not paying; it is paying by default because the box said "no subscription required" and nobody defined "required". How to check any camera before you buy
- Find the vendor's own plan comparison page (not a retailer listing) and read the column with no plan. If it says "live view and notifications" and nothing about recording, it is a Ring-style camera.
- Look for the words microSD, hub, base station or NVR on the product page. If none appear, there is no local storage.
- Check whether person or vehicle detection is listed under the free column or the paid one.
- Check whether the plan price is per device or per household, and multiply by the cameras you will own in year two.
- Read the last twelve months of the vendor's support announcements for a price change. Blink and Wyze have both raised plan prices since October 2025.
