How to replace the backup battery in an ADT or Honeywell Vista panel

A keypad showing BAT or SYSTEM LO BATTERY is telling you that a consumable part has worn out. It is one of the few alarm-system repairs that is genuinely a homeowner job: a low-voltage battery sitting in a metal box, held on by two push-on connectors. ADT's own instructions say so plainly, noting that in most cases you can do it yourself and that a technician visit carries their standard service charge.
There is one complication nobody mentions, and it is the reason this page exists. We pulled the three most widely published procedures for this exact job on this exact panel family, from ADT, from Brinks Home and from Alarm Grid. They contradict each other on three of the five steps, including the one step with a safety consequence. If you have been following an instruction you found somewhere and it did not match the last one you read, you were not imagining it.
Below is what all three agree on, exactly where they diverge, which version we follow and why, and what changes if nobody monitors your system any more.
Stop before you touch it if any of these are true. ADT's instructions tell customers to close the panel and book a service call rather than continue if the existing battery has a swollen or split case, liquid leaking from it, corroded terminals, or a case that is hot. A damaged sealed lead-acid battery is a genuine injury risk and it is not worth the $25 you would save. The same applies if smoke or heat detectors report through the panel and you are not confident about putting the system back exactly as you found it.
First: make sure it is the panel battery and not a sensor battery
Vista-family keypads use the same word for two completely different parts, and the difference is whether a zone number appears next to it.

If you are not yet sure the noise is even coming from the security panel, work through why your alarm keeps beeping first. That page starts by identifying which device in the house is actually making the sound, which is a surprisingly common source of wasted afternoons.
Which battery to buy
The three documents agree on the specification more than they agree on anything else.
- Type and voltage: rechargeable sealed lead-acid, 12 volts DC. Not a lithium pack, not a car battery, not a generic "12V" hobby cell.
- Capacity: Brinks specifies 4Ah minimum, rated to run the system for 24 hours, and describes the reconnected unit as a 12 volt 4 to 7 amp battery. ADT states the backup battery will be one of two sizes, 4Ah or 7Ah, and that the replacement they ship is the larger 7Ah.
- Physical fit: this is the part that catches people. ADT's own procedure includes a checkpoint for it: take the new 7Ah battery out of the carton and confirm there is room in the cabinet before disconnecting anything. If it does not fit, close the door and book a service call rather than improvising.
- Terminals: these batteries use flat push-on spade terminals, and they come in more than one width. Match the connector style on the battery you are removing. A connector that will not seat firmly is a connector that will work loose.
Alarm Grid puts the consequence of getting this wrong bluntly: using an incorrect battery can cause the system to experience permanent damage. The safest method is the least clever one. Photograph the label on the old battery, and buy something that matches it on voltage, amp-hours, physical dimensions and terminal style.
ADT customers have a shortcut here. ADT's document tells customers to call and have a replacement battery sent, and adds that if the control panel door is locked and you do not have a key, telling the representative will get a key sent to you. Both are worth knowing before you start hunting for a locksmith.
Before you open the cabinet
Two steps, and one of them only applies to some readers.
- Disarm the system. Not negotiable. Opening the enclosure on an armed system trips the tamper switch.
- If the system is monitored, put the account on test first. Alarm Grid is explicit that removing the cover causes a tamper response from the panel, and that you should be on test with the monitoring station before that happens. ADT's procedure builds this in at both ends: call to be placed on test at step 1, and call again at the end to be removed from test so normal monitoring resumes. Forgetting the second call is how people end up with a system that quietly is not watching anything.
If nobody monitors the system, skip step 2 entirely. There is no centre to notify and no dispatch to prevent, so the tamper will simply make a noise you then silence. This is the situation a large share of people replacing these batteries are actually in, and every vendor page ignores it because it describes someone who is not their customer. The genuine trade-offs of being in that position are that no company will send you a panel key or a battery, and there is no technician backstop if the panel does not recover. One more thing ADT's document insists on and the others do not mention: use electrically insulated tools. If your pliers are bare metal, wrap the jaws in electrical tape. The point is not the 12 volts, it is that a sealed lead-acid battery can push an enormous current into a short circuit, and the resulting heat and sparks are what cause burns.
Where the three published procedures disagree
Here is the conflict laid out honestly, because the alternative is picking one at random and presenting it as fact.

Which one we follow, and why
On the disconnect order we follow ADT: black first. The reasoning is ordinary electrical practice rather than anything specific to alarm panels. The battery sits in a grounded metal cabinet. If you remove the positive lead first, you are left with a bare, live positive terminal a few centimetres from earthed steel, with the negative still connected and completing half the circuit for you. Any slip of a tool or a dangling connector shorts the battery. Take the negative off first and that path does not exist. It is not a coincidence that ADT, the only one of the three whose document carries a full battery-safety warning section, is also the one that sequences it this way.
On reconnection the order reverses for the same reason: positive on first while the circuit is still open, negative last.
On AC power we follow ADT and Brinks: switch it off. Alarm Grid's suggestion to leave the transformer plugged in has a real logic behind it, which is that the panel keeps running and starts charging immediately. But it also means the panel's charging circuit is live while you are handling connectors, and for a first-time DIY swap the conservative choice is the better one. Pull the transformer or switch off the breaker for its outlet.
A note of fairness: if you are an active Brinks or ADT customer, your own provider's instructions govern your service relationship with them, and following the order in their help centre is not going to void anything. This section is about which procedure is technically safer, not about who is allowed to tell you what.
The procedure
This is the reconciled sequence, drawn from all three documents with the conflicts resolved as explained above.
- Disarm the system. If it is monitored, call and have the account placed on test.
- Remove AC power from the panel, by unplugging the transformer or switching off the breaker feeding its outlet.
- Open the control cabinet. It is usually a grey or beige metal box roughly the size of a shoebox, in a closet, basement, garage or utility room. Remove the screws on the side of the cover, or use the panel key if it is locked. The tamper will sound; press any key on the keypad to silence it.
- Inspect the old battery before touching it. Swollen, split, leaking, corroded or hot means stop, close up and call a professional.
- Check the new battery fits in the available space, out of its carton, before you disconnect anything.
- Disconnect the black lead from the negative terminal, then the red lead from the positive terminal. Insulated pliers help; the connectors often need a gentle wiggle. Do not let a tool or an open connector touch anything metal.
- Lift the old battery out. It is denser than it looks. A 7Ah sealed lead-acid battery weighs roughly as much as a full 2-litre bottle.
- Fit the new battery and remove any plastic terminal protectors.
- Connect the red lead to the positive terminal first, then the black lead to the negative terminal. If the terminals are not colour coded, look for the moulded + and - marks next to them. Reversing polarity is the one mistake here that can damage the panel rather than just annoy you.
- Restore AC power.
- Clear the warning at the keypad, as below.
- Close and secure the cabinet, then test the system. If you put the account on test, call and have it taken off test.
Clearing the low battery message
This is where most of the "the new battery did not fix it" complaints come from, and almost all of them are impatience rather than a fault.
On a Vista panel, Brinks documents the keypad sequence: enter your user code, then press 1 to silence the trouble beeps, and enter the code and press 1 again to clear the displayed trouble. Brinks adds the important caveat in the same breath: the trouble will not reset until the underlying problem is actually corrected. Alarm Grid adds that performing a walk test prompts a Vista panel to re-evaluate its own battery.
Then wait. The panel will not declare the battery healthy until it has charged it enough to pass its own load test. ADT's instruction is to wait an hour and check again before calling for service. Alarm Grid says several hours. Our practical read across all three: give it up to 24 to 48 hours before concluding anything is wrong. A warning still showing an hour later is normal.
If the message is still there after a couple of days with AC power confirmed present, then you have a real fault: a bad new battery, a failed charging circuit on the board, or a different trouble condition wearing the same label. That is the point at which a technician is buying you something.
How often to replace it, and what to do with the old one
No manufacturer consumer page we found commits to a number. ADT says only that the battery must be replaced from time to time due to age and usage, in the same way a car battery does. Industry and battery-supplier guidance clusters at three to five years, with the battery down to roughly 80 percent of its rated capacity by the end of that window. We report that as industry guidance rather than a manufacturer specification, because that is what it is.
The sensible framing is that this is a scheduled consumable, not a repair. The whole purpose of the battery is to carry the system through a power cut you did not plan for, and a battery at 60 percent capacity passes the panel's self-test right up until the evening it matters. Write the date on the new battery with a marker before you fit it. That one habit turns a future emergency into a diary entry.
For disposal: it is a lead-acid battery and it does not belong in household waste. ADT points its customers at call2recycle.org, where entering a ZIP code returns nearby drop-off locations, free of charge. Most auto-parts and hardware retailers also accept sealed lead-acid batteries over the counter.
One last habit worth stealing from ADT's document, which recommends testing the system each week: whatever interval you choose, actually choose one. A backup battery that has never been tested is a guess, not a backup.
When this is not the right fix
- The beeping came back within days. A fresh battery that drains quickly usually means the panel is not charging it, or the system has been running on battery because AC never reached it. Check the transformer and the outlet before buying a second battery.
- A CHECK message with a zone number. That is a wiring or device fault, not a power problem, and no battery will touch it.
- A communication trouble. A panel that cannot reach a monitoring centre will report it forever, and if the centre stopped listening years ago it is reporting something true. - Anything hardwired into mains. Swapping a plug-in transformer is fine. Anything wired into a junction box is an electrician's job.
